Diseases of the Peripheral Nerves

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Tingling, numbness, or pain in the hand, fingers, or arm can result from pressure on the median nerve. It is important not to delay evaluation too long, as permanent nerve damage may otherwise occur.

Treatment: In the early stages, measures such as a night splint, physiotherapy, or anti-inflammatory medication can provide relief. If muscle strength continues to decline, a minor surgical procedure to divide the carpal ligament may be recommended.

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

In this condition, the ulnar nerve is compressed at the elbow. Typical symptoms include tingling or numbness along the outer edge of the hand and into the ring or little finger.

Treatment options to relieve pressure on the nerve range from rest, splinting, and physiotherapy to minor surgery.

Tumors of the Peripheral Nerves

These are rare, benign tumors affecting the peripheral nerves. They can cause pain, loss of function, or sensory disturbances.

Treatment: Small, asymptomatic tumors are kept under regular observation. When symptoms are present, modern microsurgical techniques allow for careful removal while preserving nerve function as much as possible.
