The most common indication is bradycardia – a pulse that is too slow. The implanted pacemaker stimulates the heart to beat faster, thereby improving quality of life significantly. Today, this procedure can usually be performed minimally invasively and is implanted via a skin incision about four centimeters long, subcutaneously below the clavicle or under the pectoral muscle.
In the case of severe heart failure with asynchronous cardiac action, cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is used. This means: a treatment method with a more complex pacemaker that transmits and synchronizes signals on both sides of the chamber.
