The Competence Center for Hormone and Metabolic Medicine in Munich

Born into a family of doctors - her grandmother, born in 1913, studied medicine in Jena and worked as an internist until old age - it was clear to Alexandra Schoeneich at an early age that she also wanted to become a doctor. As a child, the native northern German spent many hours in her father's general medical country practice. So in 1997, she set off for Munich, where she completed her medical studies at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and gained international experience during her studies with stays abroad in Australia and Switzerland. Her clinical training continued in 2005 at the renowned Asklepios Clinic St. Georg in Hamburg. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. D. Müller-Wieland, she completed comprehensive clinical training in the fields of metabolic diseases, diabetology, endocrinology, and gastroenterology and also worked in the emergency room. This time allowed her to gain deep insight into her later field of expertise. After comprehensive and broad-based training, Dr. Schoeneich completed her specialist training in internal medicine.

In 2012, the doctor returned to Munich to specialize intensively in endocrinology and diabetology in the specialized departments of the municipal clinics in Schwabing and Bogenhausen - each under the professional direction of Prof. Dr. R. Ritzel and Prof. P. M. Schumm-Draeger. In 2016, she completed her extraordinary training path with the specialist in endocrinology and diabetology. "From my first working day at the clinic in Hamburg, I discovered my heart for endocrinology and specialized in it with the appropriate specialist in Munich," says the empathetic doctor. "However, since endocrinology is ultimately an outpatient specialty and there are rarely indications where patients need to be admitted, this area is unfortunately relatively uninteresting for hospitals," explains Dr. Schoeneich. To best incorporate her extensive experience into patient care, switching to a private practice was a logical decision for the dedicated physician. In the following years, she worked as a senior physician at the Center for Internal Medicine 5 Courtyards and as an endocrinologist at Medicover Munich. During this time, she deepened her clinical expertise in the entire spectrum of hormonal diseases.

Since 2022, she has been a partner in the Diabetes/Hormone/Metabolism Center and could not be happier about her field. "I am particularly pleased that hormone health is increasingly coming to people's awareness, especially with regard to diabetes disease." Dr. Schoeneich has been intensively involved with this metabolic disease for many years: "Even during my clinic time in Hamburg, we tested every patient in the emergency room for diabetes." Diabetes is a silent disease: "It often progresses insidiously and multifacetedly. A sound diagnosis requires experience, time, and good listening," emphasizes the specialist. To this day, the number of unreported cases of diabetes diseases and especially of their precursors is unfortunately still too high. All the more gratifying is that awareness is growing: People with a hereditary predisposition especially are increasingly dealing with the issue. In her practice, people with type 1, type 2, and type 3 diabetes are therefore cared for and treated with great expertise and empathy. But prevention is crucial not only for this group. Dr. Schoeneich recommends regular preventive health checks with long-term sugar, cholesterol levels, kidney values, liver values, vitamin status, and blood count for everyone from the age of 40. The doctor sees an additional impetus for the new public interest in hormone health in the topic Menopause. Hormone therapy a key means of supporting women in a need- and risk-adapted way through this challenging phase to accompany.

Care of people with overweight and obesity

Other medical focuses of the doctor, who is a member of the German Society for Endocrinology, include the diagnosis and treatment of hormonal disorders, particularly of the thyroid, adrenal glands, pituitary gland, and female and male sex hormones. An important focus is also the care of people with overweight and obesity, with Dr. Schoeneich placing special emphasis on clarifying individual causes. "Many of my patients suspect a link between severe overweight and a hormonal imbalance. With a sound diagnosis from me, the path to a healthier self often begins." She also cares for numerous patients with cycle disorders, PCOS, or complaints during the Peri- and menopause and accompanies women with unfulfilled desire for children from an endocrinological perspective. "We want to help our patients understand themselves and their bodies better - and regain control over their health," says the doctor. An aim that is pursued in this practice not only medically, but also humanely.
