Neuroimmunological diseases
The Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system. In this condition, the coverings of the nerve fibers, nerve cells, and their extensions in the brain and spinal cord are destroyed by autoimmune processes. Therefore, MS is classified as an autoimmune disease. The exact causes have not yet been fully identified - a genetic component, environmental factors, and viral infections (e.g., Epstein-Barr virus) seem to play a role. The disease usually progresses in episodes and can lead to a variety of symptoms, including coordination problems, paralysis, vision disorders, or cognitive impairments.
The diagnosis is made through blood and cerebrospinal fluid tests as well as imaging methods, particularly MRI.
The Therapy aims to reduce inflammatory reactions, slow progression, and alleviate symptoms with immunosuppressive and immunomodulating medications (see also therapies). MS is not yet curable, but it is now well treatable.
