Corneal astigmatism

Normally, the human cornea, the front part of the eyeball in front of the pupil, has a surface with a uniform spherical curvature adapted to the shape of the eyeball. This focuses and concentrates incoming light rays on a specific point in the center of the retina, the macula. CorneaHowever, this principle only works to a limited extent if the surface of the cornea is uneven: The incoming light then hits the retina more or less distorted. This defect is often congenital in affected individuals. In astigmatism, images are distorted, and a real point can appear as a line or rod (hence the term "astigmatism"). MaculaTypical symptoms of astigmatism

• impaired vision (blurred vision) both near and far

• headaches,
pain . in the eye area

These signs usually only appear with more pronounced corneal curvature. Milder variants are less noticeable.

How can corneal curvature be reliably detected?

Objective refraction: Using an infrared image projected onto the retina, the ophthalmologist can determine the degree of sharp vision. The ophthalmometer measures the cornea and determines the exact values of curvature radius and refractive power. A corneal topographer, which works even more precisely, examines the entire cornea (videokeratoscopy) on a computer basis. A conservative but effective method of examination to conclude is the use of vision charts in combination with different visual aids.

Treatment of corneal curvature

Conventional methods are so-called cylindrical glasses (spectacle lenses with a cylindrical cut), soft contact lenses that adapt to the surface of the curved cornea, or hard contact lenses that shape the cornea accordingly.

Eye laser surgery for corneal curvature

The laser smoothes the cornea by removing irregularities. Depending on diopter number and corneal thickness, the LASIK/Femto-LASIK, LASEK or ReLEx smile.

Artificial lens for corneal curvature

The artificial lens (intraocular lens) corrects astigmatism through its special shape. The method is particularly recommended for pronounced curvature of the cornea.

Corneal transplant for astigmatism

Implantation of a donor cornea can be the only promising therapy in certain cases.
