Ophthalmology – modern and humane

As an ophthalmologist, Dr. Mirka Höltzermann is dedicated to maintaining or improving the vision of her patients. This is important, as her practices in Schwaikheim and Waiblingen, each about 20 kilometers northeast of Stuttgart, which she has been running with her colleague Dr. Annette von Schnakenburg for five years, offer a lot to see.

In the rooms at both locations, not only is medicine offered at the highest level, but the ophthalmologist has also created an environment that feels homely and harmonious: The curtains in gray, taupe, and rose were made by a friend who is an interior designer, to ensure the necessary darkness during examinations, to improve acoustics – and to add a touch of elegance.

Dr. Mirka Höltermann - dedicated and competent for the health of your eyes.

The doctor chose the field of ophthalmology out of conviction after studying medicine in Tübingen – parallel to art history – and earning a doctorate in dermatology: Ophthalmology is diverse, offers overlaps with dermatology and neurology, and the age of the patients ranges from children to the elderly.

To accommodate this diversity, the doctors, who met in 2016, offer a wide range of services in each practice over 140 square meters – from pediatric vision training with a trained orthoptist to classic diagnostics for adults and even surgeries. The equipment is state-of-the-art, as the all-female team, with a total of 20 female employees, successively took over and renovated both locations. Everyone here is open to innovations if they make sense for the practice and the patients.

“Seeing is our gateway to the world,” says Dr. Höltzermann.

OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) is already considered a revolutionary technique that has allowed layers of the retina and the back of the eye to be displayed for several years. In the practices in Schwaikheim and Waiblingen, an AI-supported app is also used to calculate forecasts for wet age-related macular degeneration – a benefit for therapy approaches and patient care.

Patients also benefit from a virtual reception desk, available 24/7 for appointments, prescriptions, findings, and referrals. "As doctors, we primarily have a duty of care and can respond faster to people and their needs thanks to this tool," says Dr. Höltzermann.

The real "Telefonista" for telephone inquiries also puts people and their concerns in the foreground. "We have brought calm and efficiency into the practice routine and ensured that when patients come to us, they are immediately greeted and taken care of, rather than waiting until one of the assistants hangs up."

In addition to these "soft" services, diagnostics and preventive care are the main focus. There is, among other things, an IDRA system for tear film analysis to diagnose a widespread condition – dry eye. Treatment in the practices of Dr. Höltzermann and Dr. von Schnakenburg follows a holistic approach, including IPL therapy. This light therapy sustainably stimulates the Meibomian glands according to the latest scientific findings, and the symptoms can be significantly improved after just a few treatments.

Despite all modern technologies, patients in the practices are always the focus. "There are no switches between doctors. We are present in both practices, allowing for a close contact. We know how the dog is doing, how the final exams went, or if the daughter is getting married. This interpersonal relationship is part of a trusting relationship between patient and doctor," says Dr. Höltzermann and wishes that eyes would be more cared for.

"For many, according to the expert, vision is taken for granted—until this ability is impaired."

Only then do people realize that they receive over 70 percent of information visually. She is therefore committed to education – also on her Instagram channel – and advocates for regular preventive care, at the latest from the age of 40. This way, diseases such as glaucoma, which often remain unnoticed for a long time, can be detected and treated early.

“Today, we demand a lot from this highly developed sensory organ through long hours of screen time, UV light, or lash extensions, and we should take care to look after it and have it regularly checked,” says Dr. Mirka Höltzermann. For the expert, the eye is above all one thing: a masterpiece.
