Sweating is a natural process of the body that sets in to protect it from overheating - whether in the blazing sun, during strenuous physical activities, or in the sauna. The consumption of very spicy foods or excitement can also lead to increased sweating. However, there are also people who sweat quickly and profusely without any external influences. They suffer from so-called hyperhidrosis, a condition that can significantly impair quality of life.
Hyperhidrosis occurs in two forms: primary hyperhidrosis usually begins during puberty and often persists for a lifetime. In contrast, sweating in secondary hyperhidrosis is a symptom of a disease. Causes for this can include infections, metabolic diseases, hormonal disorders, or tumors . If affected individuals sweat only in certain areas of the body, such as the armpits or the hands, it is referred to as focal hyperhidrosis, which occurs almost exclusively in primary hyperhidrosis.
Prevent excessive sweating for a certain period of time.
A particularly successful method to treat excessive sweating is the use of botulinum toxin (Botox). It is injected subcutaneously in a grid-like pattern into the skin; for example, approximately 10 to 20 times per armpit. To reduce the pain of the injections, the area of skin to be treated is numbed in advance with an anesthetic ointment. The palms and soles of the feet can also be treated with Botox. However, because there are many nerve endings in these areas, the procedure is significantly more painful. A local anesthetic that numbs the entire hand or foot is recommended here.
The sweat-reducing effect does not occur immediately after the treatment. It usually takes up to 14 days for sweating to noticeably decrease. To achieve a sustainable result, it is advisable to repeat this treatment approximately every 6 to 9 months.
Shortly after the treatment, slight bruising may occur; in rare cases, there may be injuries to nerves or blood vessels. Once the patient leaves the practice, he can usually resume his normal everyday life.
