Breast reduction

Prior to the procedure, a thorough medical examination and, if necessary, a mammogram (X-ray examination of the breast) are recommended to rule out lumps in the breast.

Procedure of Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is usually performed under general anesthesia. It takes two to three and a half hours. A short hospital stay afterwards is advisable. The doctor removes excess tissue from the lower breast area. The nipple is repositioned and possibly reduced in size. Additionally, fat can be suctioned from the breast. The incision method varies depending on the size of the breast: The surgeon either cuts around the nipple and vertically downwards. In this case, a scar remains around the nipple and vertically downwards.

For sagging breasts, the incision runs around the nipple, downwards, and often additionally to the side. This results in an L-shaped scar, namely downwards and to the side. Very large breasts require an incision around the nipple, downwards, and to both sides. What remains is a reversed T-shaped scar.

After the skin suture, a tight bandage is applied to reduce swelling and protect the wounds.

Risks of Breast Reduction

In addition to bruising and swelling, bleeding, infections, and wound healing disorders can occur. The skin often feels numb after the operation. Sensory disturbances may remain, or the nipple may not respond during Sex as it used to. Some women subsequently have problems breastfeeding their child. Additionally, clearly visible scars remain.

After the surgery

A supportive special bra prescribed by the doctor should be worn for three to six weeks. The fresh scars need consistent sun protection. Heavy lifting, sport and exertion are taboo for four weeks. Complete healing takes time. The final cosmetic result is visible after three to six months.
