Prof. Dr. med. Helen Abel

Handchirurgie am Wittelsbacherplatz

Precision Down to the Fingertips

Bright rooms, contemporary interiors, art on the walls in place of clinical austerity. Stepping into the private practice of Prof. Dr. Helen Abel on Finkenstraße in Munich — just a short walk from Wittelsbacherplatz — one might imagine many things, but a traditional surgical practice would hardly come to mind. That was entirely by design. After more than 16 years as a hand surgeon at the Klinikum Rechts der Isar of the Technical University of Munich, Prof. Dr. Abel made a deliberate choice to chart a new course. With the opening of her own hand surgery practice in May 2025, she created a place that embodies her vision of modern medicine: highly specialised, deeply personal, and consciously different.

Working closely with an interior designer, Prof. Dr. Helen Abel developed a practice concept that brings together functionality and aesthetics. Light-filled, spacious rooms, three well-appointed treatment rooms, and a dedicated operating theatre for outpatient procedures create ideal conditions for streamlined care pathways and a truly individualised patient experience. She is supported by a five-person team for whom warmth, competence, and respectful patient care are simply a matter of course.

"I always wanted to understand how the human body works."

Prof. Dr. Helen Abel

When asked about the beginnings of her career, Prof. Dr. Abel's story starts long before her studies and specialist training.

For her medical studies, she left her home by Lake Constance and moved to Munich — a decision that would prove formative for her professional path. A period of study at Harvard Medical School in Boston laid an early foundation for her academic career. After obtaining her medical licence and completing her doctorate, she undertook her specialist training at Klinikum Rechts der Isar, supplemented by rotations in orthopaedics and sports orthopaedics. This was followed by specialist recognition in orthopaedics and trauma surgery, her habilitation, the additional qualification in hand surgery, and a long-standing role as a senior physician in hand surgery. Her academic career advanced in parallel, culminating in a professorship.

For this mother of two young children, opening her own practice in 2025 was also a conscious personal decision — a work environment that upholds her high medical standards while offering a sustainable balance between career and family life.

Fascination with the Hand

Prof. Dr. Helen Abel knew from an early stage that she wanted to operate. Yet her decision to specialise in hand surgery was thoroughly considered:

It is precisely this combination of the utmost precision, microsurgical finesse, and medical diversity that continues to inspire her. Few other specialities encompass such a broad spectrum of conditions and treatment options — while at the same time offering patients the chance to regain their mobility and quality of life.

"The hand is incredibly complex. In the smallest of spaces, bones, tendons, muscles, ligaments, nerves, and vessels all come together. It is precisely this perfect interplay that fascinates me to this day."

At her private practice, Prof. Dr. Helen Abel treats the full spectrum of hand and wrist surgery. This encompasses acute injuries as well as degenerative conditions, nerve compression syndromes, and disorders of the tendons, ligaments, and joints. The most common diagnoses include carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, joint disease, and rhizarthrosis — osteoarthritis of the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb, which can significantly impair everyday movements. Treating this condition is one of her particular areas of focus. She explains:

The treatment spectrum also includes Dupuytren's disease, ganglions, fractures, and injuries to tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Smaller procedures are performed on an outpatient basis in the practice's own operating theatre, while more complex operations take place at the IATROS Klinik, where she works as an attending physician.

The Patient at the Centre

"I don't operate on anything that doesn't need to be operated on."

This guiding principle captures Prof. Dr. Abel's medical philosophy more clearly than any professional title. Every treatment begins with thorough diagnostics, an in-depth consultation, and a shared decision about which approach offers the greatest chance of success for each individual patient. She views conservative and surgical methods not as opposites, but as complementary options that work best in combination.

In addition to modern diagnostic procedures such as digital volume tomography (DVT), she also employs shockwave therapy, magnetic field therapy, and autologous blood treatments, among others. She also works closely with specialised hand therapists. As a result, many conditions can be managed conservatively or supported optimally following surgery.

Her patients continue to benefit from her many years at the university hospital. Over the course of her career, Prof. Dr. Abel has built a close interdisciplinary network. Whether radiology, neurology, rheumatology, or specialised hand therapy — diagnostics, treatment, and follow-up care are closely coordinated, ensuring seamless support at every stage of treatment.

Personal care for her patients is equally important to her. From the initial consultation through any necessary surgery to aftercare, Prof. Dr. Abel remains a consistent point of contact throughout. Even after a procedure, her patients are never left to navigate things alone: with direct contact options and a dedicated emergency number, they have the reassurance of being able to reach the practice at any time with questions or unexpected concerns. Prof. Dr. Helen Abel considers this close personal relationship an integral part of modern and responsible
