Dr. med. Ivo Breitenbacher

MVZ für Orthopädie Flugfeld

Becoming a doctor was clear from the start for the son of a general practitioner and country doctor – orthopedics then a logical step for the passionate athletewho used to play tennis tournaments himself. After studying in Heidelberg, Dr. Ivo Breitenbacher was able to gain extensive experience in various clinics already during his specialist training. "Learning from the best" was his claim, which led him to Austria and Japan, among other places, where he came into contact with many manual and also alternative treatment methods. Early on, he focused on conservative orthopedics, particularly holistic and bioregenerative therapy concepts. Additional training and qualifications in shock wave therapy, osteopathy, chiropractic, sports medicine and acupuncture.

Since 2024, Dr. Breitenbacher has been leading the MVZ for Orthopedics at Flugfeld Böblingen. A location that offers sufficient space on approximately 900 square meters to optimally integrate diagnosis, therapy, and training.

A strong interdisciplinary team of specialists, sports instructors, physiotherapists, and osteopaths ensures a continuous range of services from diagnostics to training.

The medical care center has an open MRI for, among other things, injection therapies, e.g., with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) obtained from one's own blood, also in combination with hyaluronic acid.

Rehabilitation does not begin only after therapy. The MVZ for Orthopedics Flugfeld Böblingen provides its own therapy and training area for this purpose, including classic physiotherapy, physical measures, or osteopathy.

"Staying mobile is always the most important thing," says Dr. Breitenbacher's message. "Studies show that just 4,000 steps a day are enough to significantly reduce the risk of death."

What drives him every day? “Seeing satisfied and happy patients at follow-up appointments, whom we have been able to help sustainably after a long odyssey or spared from surgery.”

State-of-the-art equipment awaits you at the MVZ for Orthopedics Flugfeld Böblingen.

"Our goal is to delay operations as much as possible or to avoid them altogether—if the body is given the chance to heal itself," emphasizes Dr. Ivo Breitenbacher.

Since 2024, he has been leading the MVZ for Orthopedics Flugfeld Böblingen – stemming from his practice established in Sindelfingen since 2001. A location centrally situated in the catchment area of Stuttgart, Tübingen, Heilbronn, Ludwigsburg, and Pforzheim, offering ample space on around 900 square meters to seamlessly integrate diagnosis, therapy, and training. This is ensured by a strong interdisciplinary team of specialists, sports teachers, physiotherapists, and osteopaths – providing a continuous range from diagnostics to training.

Conservative orthopedics and regenerative procedures

"Our goal is to delay or entirely avoid surgeries whenever possible – if the body gets the chance to heal itself," emphasizes Dr. Ivo Breitenbacher. For this purpose, he and his team rely on methods such as shock wave therapy or injection therapies, e.g., with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) derived from autologous blood, also in combination with hyaluronic acid. This promotes regeneration and cell healing in joint cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and muscles stimulated. "Especially in cases of arthrosis, you get a good and sustainable combination effect because both the inflammation and the protection of the cartilage are addressed," explains Dr. Ivo Breitenbacher. And to ensure everything reaches the target site as precisely as possible, injections are often performed today with an anti-magnetic special needle in the open MRI.

Promising innovative approaches for osteoarthritis

Currently, Breitenbacher is particularly convinced of a novel polyacrylamide hydrogel (Arthrosamid) in the treatment of medium to advanced stages, which is also injected under MRI guidance. "It permanently integrates into the joint lining, creating a new barrier that reduces and stops swelling in the joint." A single injection can significantly reduce the pain level - ideally lasting up to four years.

Another pioneering method is Autologous Microtransplantation Technology (AMT). It is also a non-surgical, but still little-known method. "In this process, highly potent cartilage precursor cells are obtained from the ear cartilage using a micro-punch and, after appropriate preparation, injected into the joint as a suspension," says Dr. Breitenbacher. "Pain relief as well as improved mobility unfold after just a few days and can last up to 5 years."

New approaches to back problems

For disc problems, Dr. Breitenbacher also pursues an innovative approach: "With a robotic-assisted extension procedure (SpineMED Table), we perform decompression treatment of the disc." In this process, the patient lies on a special treatment couch, which gently relieves the affected disc segment with intermittent and computer-monitored traction. "As a result, the protruding disc tissue slowly retracts, the pressure decreases, nerves and spinal cord tissue are relieved, and the disc can refill with fluid," explains the specialist.

The treatment lasts only 30 minutes, and after just five sessions, a significant improvement can be felt. It is also well and successfully combined, for example, with MRI-guided injections, osteopathy, myofascial techniques, or acupuncture - as well as with a novel, special form of acupuncture called "Percutaneous Bioelectric Current Stimulation" or "Axomera Therapy." To this end, acupuncture needles are connected to a device that generates microcurrent and thus modulates the body's own electric fields," explains the expert. "In this way, the regeneration of diseased or injured tissue is stimulated." This therapy was inspired by the axolotl, a Mexican salamander that can regenerate parts of its body by producing tiny electric currents in the tissue.

"Staying flexible is always the most important thing."

High-tech in prevention and rehab

Rehabilitation does not begin after therapy. For this purpose, the MVZ for Orthopedics Flugfeld Böblingen provides its own therapy and training area, with classical physiotherapy, physical measures, or osteopathy. Innovative devices are also used here, such as the NASA-developed anti-gravity treadmill, which Running simulated in weightlessness. It allows gait training with up to 80 percent weight relief via a kind of air cushion. "This way, the load, for example after surgeries, can be finely dosed and carefully built up again," explains Breitenbacher.

And he is building on another novel system: a motorized platform (HUBER) that performs a neuromuscular analysis via sensors and detects imbalances. Based on this, it creates a training, which targets flexibility and strengthening, posture and balance, or endurance.

"Staying flexible is always the most important thing," says Dr. Breitenbacher's message. "Studies show that just 4,000 steps a day are enough to significantly reduce the risk of death. In addition, accompanying strength training can be useful - a good start is, for example, High Intensity Training (HIT), like Tabata. Here, training can be done as effectively in just four minutes a day as in three hours of strength training in the gym." In short: everyone ultimately has it in their own hands to take care of their body and remain healthy orthopedically for a long time.

What drives him every day? "Seeing satisfied and happy patients at the follow-up appointment, whom we have been able to sustainably help after a long odyssey or whom we have spared surgery."
