Elotrans is celebrated on social media for wiping out the after-effects of wine, beer, and cocktails with glucose and electrolytes. But is it true?

Elotrans has been considered an insider tip for hangovers for years. But new studies are calling its underlying premise into question. Internist Prof. Antje Habicht explains what electrolytes actually do after drinking alcohol – and where their limits lie.
"I'm pretty sure Elotrans is made in a secret lab where unicorns supply the water, fairies label the bottles, and centaurs carry out quality control." So reads one glowing Amazon review of Elotrans as a hangover remedy.
Apparently this powder from pharmaceutical company Stada, based in Bad Vilbel, also has a way of inspiring poetic flights of fancy – yet it is actually a diarrhea medication that has risen to cult status as a hangover cure thanks to social media. Its reputation in that role shows no sign of fading. But newer research is now challenging the very assumption it rests on: that fluid loss is a major driver of hangovers.
A small 6.03-gram sachet has become a must-have for carnival, Oktoberfest, birthday parties, and Christmas celebrations. It is touted as a "miracle cure" and supposedly works like the neuralyzer from the film Men in Black – except that where the neuralyzer erased all memory of extraterrestrials, Elotrans is said to erase the after-effects of wine, beer, and cocktails with glucose and electrolytes.
In reality, it was developed to make up for deficits when the body has lost fluids and important minerals during gastrointestinal illness. The combination of glucose and electrolytes helps the intestines absorb water more effectively.
Because alcohol can also increase fluid excretion, the idea took hold that Elotrans might counteract hangover symptoms as well. Munich-based internist Professor Antje Habicht cautions, however: "The body loses significantly more fluid during an acute gastrointestinal illness than it does through alcohol."
Doctors were particularly critical of the hype because a medication intended for people with diarrheal illness was suddenly being repurposed as a party remedy. Severe fluid loss from diarrhea can be especially dangerous for infants and young children.
But does taking Elotrans actually help offset the consequences of a heavy night of drinking? Professor Antje Habicht says: "A hangover has multiple causes that are not yet fully understood. Electrolytes only address one specific symptom: the headache caused by fluid loss."
However, newer research suggests that even this connection may be less straightforward than long assumed. A review published in 2024 analyzed 13 publications on the relationship between fluid balance and hangovers. The finding: dehydration and hangovers can occur at the same time, but appear to be largely independent consequences of alcohol consumption. Thirst and a dry mouth typically resolved much faster than the actual hangover symptoms. Drinking water during or immediately after consuming alcohol also failed to reliably prevent a hangover the following morning.
A randomized crossover study published in 2026 adds further evidence that the simple equation "more water, less hangover" doesn't hold up. In two separate trial runs, 13 men drank the same amount of alcohol – once with additional water and once without. Even though they drank more than a liter of extra water, typical next-morning complaints such as headaches, nausea, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating did not differ significantly between the two conditions.
The study is small and looked at water rather than an electrolyte solution, so it cannot answer whether Elotrans might ease individual symptoms. Together with the 2024 review, however, it challenges the widespread belief that a hangover is primarily the result of fluid deficiency.
The throbbing pain can stem from a range of factors. Alcohol and its breakdown products interfere with numerous processes in the body. Inflammatory responses, oxidative stress, and disrupted sleep are also now being discussed as possible contributors. Individual substances such as quercetin or certain fusel alcohols have been studied as well, but none of them alone explains the complex chain of events.
Electrolytes are not necessarily useless, then. Anyone who has lost fluids through alcohol can use them to make up for that loss. But better rehydration does not automatically mean that nausea, exhaustion, headaches, and other hangover symptoms will disappear along with it.
The hype surrounding this supposed hangover killer cannot, in any case, be scientifically substantiated. The appeal of the idea is obvious: tear open a sachet and make the effects of too much alcohol simply vanish.
But perhaps headaches, an upset stomach, weakness, and sweating also serve some regulatory function, Professor Habicht suggests. Having to face the consequences of one's actions sits uneasily in an era that expects everything to happen quickly and on demand.
For those who simply want to replenish lost fluids, another trend may be a better fit: the DIY approach. Anyone still capable of stirring a few ingredients together after a night out can make their own rehydration solution at home.
The recipe from the original version of this article – four teaspoons of sugar, ¾ teaspoon of table salt, and a cup of orange juice in one liter of mineral water – does not, however, match the current recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO). For a simple homemade rehydration solution, the WHO specifies six level teaspoons of sugar and half a teaspoon of salt per liter of clean water.
Such a solution is intended for situations where fluids need to be replaced – for example during gastrointestinal illness – and not as a hangover remedy. If the sole goal after a long night is to rehydrate, plain mineral water is perfectly sufficient on its own.
