With a firm handshake and an open smile, Dr. med. dent. Mark Thomas Sebastian welcomes patients on the second floor of Maximilianstraße 36. The light-filled practice is discreetly furnished with designer pieces. Historic parquet creaks underfoot. All treatment rooms face north – for optimal daylight conditions when adjusting tooth colors, like in a painter's studio. From the windows, one can see Munich's exclusive grand boulevard.
That Dr. Sebastian practices as a dentist today in the exclusive neighborhood of international designers, leading luxury jewelers, and the renowned Kammerspiele is thanks in no small part to a small note that hung on the bulletin board of Witten/Herdecke University more than 20 years ago: "Dental students wanted for Brazil," it said. Sebastian, having just passed his preliminary exams, was a student in his first clinical semester and was struggling with his unliked studies. "The enthusiasm for dentistry just hadn't sparked yet," he recalls. "History would have interested me much more back then." His father, a successful and dedicated dentist, wished to pass his practice into his son's hands. "I was on the verge of dropping out. But Brazil intrigued me."
Three weeks later, Mark Thomas Sebastian stood at the airport with a ticket in hand, and an adventurous journey to the heart of Brazil began. For six months, the student pulled teeth and set simple fillings in the jungle. "Helping these people gave so much satisfaction," he says with shining eyes, "that's when the breakthrough happened. Since then, it's been genuinely fun." Today, Dr. Sebastian is among Germany's most experienced specialists in aesthetic restorative dentistry.

Sebastian is a certified expert in periodontology and implantology, publishes scientific articles, writes textbooks, and gives lectures at dental congresses. Patients from all over the world seek his help - whether it's for discolored teeth, problems with old dentures, crooked bite lines, or missing teeth. "For me, aesthetics means copying nature in its most beautiful form," explains the dentist. "My patients should not be asked about dental treatment after a successful restoration. Instead, their environment should notice how healthy, well-rested, and fresh they look."
Together with his colleague Dr. Stefanie Wildgen, who specializes in gentle, painless root canal treatments and orthodontics, Dr. Sebastian plays the entire range of modern dentistry, from prophylaxis to implantation fixed dentures. Every therapy is preceded by detailed individual consultation. Often a computer simulation can show in advance what the result will be. "It is important to me that patients get a vision of what will happen," emphasizes Dr. Sebastian, "that's why we discuss every detail of the treatment in advance."
