Back to mobility and function

When movement becomes a restriction, nothing is taken for granted and easy. What is needed now is not only an exact diagnosis but also experience and an individually tailored path back to mobility and function. For the Sporthopaedic Practice Hamburg and its medical director Dr. Olaf Baack, it's both everyday life and a challenge.

As a specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery, surgeon, and emergency physician, he has a broad medical foundation. His understanding of movement also results from his closeness to sports: Baack has spent a large part of his life in competitive sports. As a teenager, he played American football at the Bundesliga level and in the USA, followed by years in boxing and kickboxing at the international level. In 1992, he became the German university champion in boxing.

And he is also closely connected to sports medically: as a ringside doctor for international boxing associations, as a team doctor in American football, and as the attending physician for numerous competitive and professional athletes. Since the founding of the European League of Football, he has been responsible as Head of Medical Commission for the league's medical standards – from prevention to the rulebook.

Regeneration is not a passive process, but can be specifically controlled.

Dr. Hans Olaf Baack

In addition, his many years of work as an emergency physician, including in air-based rescue services, have sharpened his focus on the essentials and developed the ability to make quick, precise, and reliable decisions in complex situations.

All this results in the aspiration not only to treat patients but to fully restore them to their performance capabilities. He stands for this together with his team of highly qualified doctors, sports scientists, and medical professionals who work closely integrated in diagnostics, therapy, and training.

To accompany patients on their path to health and resilience as comprehensively and individually as possible, the Sporthopaedic practice offers a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic options – oriented towards current and globally recognized scientific findings. Baack is active throughout Europe as a lecturer on innovative multimodal therapy concepts and exchanges ideas with the international professional community. In addition, he works on studies commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research to prevent knee endoprostheses.

This conservative approach characterizes the work in the practice. Standard solutions like “the quick cortisone injection” are deliberately not the focus – the decisive factor is sustainable, cause-oriented therapy. Whether top athletes or everyday stress: the goal is to restore everyone to their maximum performance capability, with as little downtime as possible.

All our therapies are conducted under one roof in our practice to ensure consistent and effective care.

Dr. Hans Olaf Baack

Accordingly, the technical equipment of the practice is of the highest level and functionally designed – from advanced diagnostic tools to specialized therapy devices. Modern imaging techniques such as an open MRI enable accurate diagnoses in a comfortable atmosphere for patients. This is complemented by a DVT 3D X-ray procedure, which allows for more detailed insights with significantly reduced radiation exposure.

The focus is on regenerative procedures. The spectrum ranges from differentiated injection therapies to cell-based approaches such as the use of the body's own stem cells. Especially in knee osteoarthritis, this has developed into a specialized field of treatment aimed at preserving the joint and possibly avoiding or delaying surgical interventions. The practice is also involved in research projects.

Regeneration is understood not as a passive process, but as an active, controllable process. A central aspect is the function of mitochondria – the "powerhouses" of our cells, which play a key role in healing and performance. Therapy concepts, for example, that combine whole-body cryotherapy with interval hypoxia-hyperoxia training aim to specifically stimulate these processes: to promote the formation of new, efficient cell structures and to break down damaged parts.

This approach is complemented by nutritional medical strategies that create the necessary conditions for cell regeneration.

Long downtimes are not an option for us and our patients.

Dr. Hans Olaf Baack

And if surgery is unavoidable, everything is done in advance to minimize the physical stress associated with it. Targeted prehabilitation optimizes physical conditions, reduces risks, and accelerates later rehabilitation – for example, by improving cardiovascular function, targeted muscle building, and optimizing joint situations or mobility.

Despite all the modern technical support that serves to create the most precise diagnoses and effective treatment plans, personal care remains a central component of the practice concept: From the first examination through diagnostics and therapy to surgical interventions, treatment is continuously in the hands of the same doctor. Clear scheduling also ensures that there are no waiting times. Additionally, the practice prides itself on offering the "best coffee in northern Germany."

However, what stands out is the attitude that characterizes the work of Dr. Baack and his colleagues: developing solutions that not only convince medically but also prove themselves in the everyday life and movement of the patients.
