This sentence is both a demand and a drive for Dr. Christine Mielke when it comes to the welfare of her patients. Being able to provide patients in her own surgical center individually, with outstanding surgical and therapeutic quality – that was the idea and the prerequisite for continuing her work as chief physician in her own clinic.
In her surgical center in the heart of Berlin, the experienced eye surgeon was able to build on an intensive and successful twenty-year career in the clinic when it was founded in 2012. The challenge and opportunity was now not only to examine patients with the latest diagnostics and treat them according to the latest scientific findings, as usual, but also to enable a very personal, patient-oriented and highly professional treatment together with her well-trained and specialized team.
Before Dr. Mielke settled down, she completed a scientific career that is unparalleled. After studying at the Humboldt University of Berlin, her dissertation, which she completed with “summa cum laude”, led to a first award: the Joachim Tiburtius Prize, the science prize of all universities and faculties in Berlin. She was the first female doctor to be awarded. This was followed by awards and prizes for scientific lectures and video presentations during her later clinical work abroad and in Germany. In her own practice, she now conducts studies in the field of intraocular lens surgery and glaucoma. and supervises master's and bachelor's theses.
After specialist training at the University Eye Clinic of the Charité, more than four years of further surgical, professional and scientific specialization as a senior physician abroad followed, including in the university eye clinics St. Thomas Eye Hospital in London and Bristol Eye Hospital, as well as in the university eye clinic Lausanne. In between, she was able to combine her calling with the heartfelt desire from childhood to go to Africa: For a total of six years, she worked twice a year for two weeks at a time in a small hospital in West Africa alongside her normal work in Europe. There, too, she gained immense experience in the field of treatment and surgery for glaucoma, which has the highest incidence worldwide in Western Africa.
"Even as a highly specialized doctor and surgeon, you are only as good as your team!"
Dr. med. Christine Mielke
The well-founded scientific orientation is also reflected throughout the entire operating center: Technical equipment and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures meet university standards. And: “In addition to our experienced specialists with many years of experience, all team members are also experienced, specialized, or trained employees, optometrists, or master opticians,” says Dr. Mielke. Nevertheless, despite all the professional competence, what particularly distinguishes our entire team is the warm and attentive care of our patients. Professionalism and individual patient-oriented treatment go hand in hand, emphasizes the passionate doctor. As a highly specialized physician and surgeon, you are only as good as your team!
Patients should feel well cared for professionally but also feel comfortable. An important factor that also has a positive influence on fears before an operation. In designing her practice rooms, the surgeon was able to realize one of her hobbies – she transformed the empty concrete shell of the building into a practice with a feel-good atmosphere with her ideas. The patients perceive the opulently greened plant walls as particularly beautiful and calming. In addition to the very open interior, special design elements such as a light sculpture repeatedly catch the eye. "I was my own interior designer for the practice," she beams and recounts the beginnings when she was able to design the rooms functionally and individually according to her plans.
In addition to her medical vocation, traveling and photography are passions of the friendly doctor. She documented the construction phase of her practice with photos, which can be seen in the waiting area – what an impressive transformation! The operational eye center "eyelight" with a spectacular view over the roofs of Berlin is located on the upper floor of a former bank building.
"I find it particularly nice that I can draw on a vast wealth of knowledge and remain flexible both surgically and content-wise."
Dr. Christine Mielke, MD
With her many years of surgical experience and routine in the clinic, Dr. Christine Mielke covers a broad spectrum in ophthalmology. What does she like to do most? "I can't really say... because I find it particularly nice that I can draw on a wealth of knowledge and remain flexible both surgically and content-wise." The surgical focuses include Cataractsurgery, refractive surgery, and glaucoma surgery: also laser procedures and intravitreal injections (IVOM) for retinal diseases, especially the macula. Also, plastic-aesthetic and plastic-reconstructive eyelid surgery have been part of the doctor's portfolio for 25 years.
In the field of refractive (cataract) surgery, she has been implanting special lenses for 15 years with a focus on the best possible and precise correction of visual defects. She describes the development of toric intraocular lenses as groundbreaking in intraocular lens surgery, alongside the development of microincision and minimally invasive procedures, known as phacoemulsification. With these, it is possible to correct an existing corneal change, known as corneal astigmatism, simultaneously with any currently available lens design, including multifocal lenses such as EDOF or multifocal intraocular lenses. A spectacular invention, considering that with one lens operation, a refractive error in another area of the eye, namely the cornea, can be corrected without even touching it. In her surgery center, Dr. Mielke was one of the first surgeons worldwide in 2012 to precisely align these intraocular lenses in the axis to be corrected without contact, using an eye tracker. Today, this method is recognized worldwide for the implantation of toric intraocular lenses. The friendly eye surgeon also has a solution for the topic of freedom from glasses with her expertise in the field of implantable contact lenses, known as ICL.
With all the innovative possibilities available today in the fascinating field of ophthalmology, the dedicated doctor always focuses on the individual treatment and satisfaction of her patients.
