MKG Lindenthal
If Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Dr. med. dent. Timm Steiner hadn't frequently assisted his grandfather, a skilled locksmith, as a child, he might not have discovered his passion for screws, nuts, and the smallest of tools. Exactly what now defines his daily work as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. But even though his grandfather was a great role model in craftsmanship, the desire to follow in his footsteps wasn't particularly strong – but his fascination with medicine was.
After graduating from high school and completing his military service, Timm Steiner initially studied human medicine at Saarland University. After visiting his twin brother, who was studying dentistry in Freiburg and whose lectures he initially attended for fun, he was so impressed by the case studies there that he also completed a dental degree at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. “What sets us maxillofacial surgeons apart from oral surgeons is our training. We are both licensed doctors and licensed dentists and then undergo a five-year specialist training in maxillofacial surgery,” explains Dr. Steiner.
In Munich, in 2004, he began his time as an assistant doctor in oral, maxillofacial, and facial surgery at the Technical University in the Rechts der Isar Clinic, where he received his two doctorates and completed his specialist training. When in 2011 his senior consultant at the RWTH Aachen University Clinic became the chief physician of the Department of Oral, Maxillofacial, and Facial Surgery, it was clear to Dr. Steiner that he would accompany him to the Rhineland. As a senior consultant, he habilitated at this university clinic at the beginning of 2017 and fulfilled his dream of having his own practice in the same year: MKG Lindenthal.
In Cologne-Lindenthal, probably the most beautiful and greenest part of the city, between the venerable Melaten Cemetery and the idyllic Rautenstrauch Canal, the practice is located on the first floor of a large medical building. Here, on around 200 square meters, the dedicated doctor operates and treats all oral, maxillofacial, and facial surgical indications. Naturally, all three treatment rooms are equipped to the most modern standards. This includes, for example, 3D X-ray (DVT), various laser techniques, or the ultrasound surgery method with piezosurgery.
A fully equipped operating room, where operations under general anesthesia can be performed (for which a trained anesthetist is available), is also part of the practice. The charismatic doctor remains loyal to the university clinic; every Wednesday, he operates as a salaried senior consultant in the MKG department and in the laser center, which he and Prof. Dr. Jens Baron founded.
"We oral surgeons are the specialists when it comes to surgical procedures in the facial area."
Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Dr. med. dent. Timm Steiner
The oral surgeon is a specialist when it comes to surgical procedures in the facial area. "Erroneously, many still assume our work is similar to that of an orthodontist. Of course, the goal of our work is to maintain the functionality of the dentition, but that doesn't refer to mere tooth alignment. Rather, it often involves complex treatments with surgical intervention," reveals Dr. Steiner, who is a member of the German Society for Oral, Maxillofacial, and Facial Surgery (DGMKG), among others.
Thus, in addition to typical dental procedures such as the removal of wisdom teeth, his range of services also includes treatments for jaw fractures, jaw misalignments, as well as operations on benign and malignant tumors in the oral area. However, the main focus of MKG Lindenthal is on implantology. Whether more complex procedures with multiple implants, which are often preceded by bone augmentation, or the placement of a single implant – the skilled surgeon knows the right model and ideal methodology for every bone structure and does everything for an intervention with as little pain and swelling as possible.
"With my in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy, I can achieve an optimal harmonious result with minimally invasive anti-aging treatments."

In recent years, the full-blooded physician has also expanded his personal portfolio into the minimally invasive anti-aging sector. His 'Concept of Beauty' offers a solution for every aesthetic problem here. "The anatomy and functionality of the face is very complex. Facial expressions involve the interplay of many muscles, with 17 muscles alone controlling our smile. It requires an absolutely sound knowledge of this subject to achieve an optimal harmonious result," explains Dr. Steiner.
Besides the classic wrinkle injections and volume enhancement, for example in the nasolabial area, Dr. Steiner also regularly performs upper eyelid corrections and forehead lifts. His lovingly named laser fleet (CO2 laser, soft laser, or flash lamp) is also used to free the skin from hyperpigmentation, sun damage, scars, or slight wrinkles. Most of his procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. "If an operation involves an inpatient stay, they are carried out by me either at the University Hospital Aachen or at the Evangelical Diakonie Hospital Cologne Kalk," says the doctor.
For his future, the specialist, who according to FOCUS has been among the best doctors in Germany since 2021, has a lot planned. He aims to achieve his European specialist status and wants to train doctors. "And if one day it comes to the point that I can no longer stand in the OR, then I will return to research and teaching. But luckily there's still plenty of time until then," laughs Dr. Timm Steiner.
